In case you missed it, the 2015 VMAs weren’t without drama, as the king of drama himself, rapper Kanye West, stood up to receive the Michael Jackson Vanguard Award. He gave a memorable and completely off-the-wall speech that went from shocking to confusing as he talked, and talked, about everything from his previous stage antics to his upcoming bid for president in 2020!
"And yes, as you probably could have guessed by this moment, I have decided in 2020 to run for president."
Music fans at inside L.A.’s Microsoft Theater and millions of viewers who tuned in to the live broadcast- and yes, event organizers too, were treated to a rather unusual speech as the 38 year old rapper went from apologizing for his 2009 Taylor Swift moment to calling out Justin Timberlake for apparently crying, when he lost “Album of The Year” at the Grammy’s, to the Dixie Chicks in 2007.
West’s complicated relationship with MTV then only seemed to take a new direction as he called out the network for allegedly using his 2009 Taylor stage-crash footage to garner more ratings. West crashed the stage and interrupted Swift while she was accepting her “Best Female Video” award, taking her mic from her.
"I'm not no politician, bro.” He went on; “...”I still don't understand awards shows. …”I don't understand when the biggest album or the biggest video—I don't understand it, bro.”
The speech came as a shock to everyone, especially because in the weeks leading to the event, Kanye went back and forth with organizers. Initially he had said he would perform, and then he said he wouldn’t come at all, and the day of the event there was talk that he might perform.
His family too, appeared shocked, including his pregnant wife, Kim Kardashian, his mom-in-law Kris Jenner and sisters-in-law Kylie Jenner and Kourtney Kardashian. The award was presented by Kanye’s former nemesis, Taylor Swift, who during the endless rant stood awkwardly next to Kim in the audience.
“Bro. Bro. Listen to the kids.” He first got on stage and grinned, without saying anything for several minutes, and after the long moment of silence- during which time insiders thought he was going to perform, West started on his rants.
His moment included a mix of “Bros, listen to the kids”, sweet fatherhood anecdotes and quotes, and an admission that he had in fact “rolled up a little something” before hitting up the show.
Justin Timberlake was the last person anyone thought Kanye would bring up during his melodramas but the singer caught wind of the kind of shady shoutout and went to Twitter to respond! “Kanye is so cute, y’all,” he tweeted. But after he appreared to have gotten some flak for the apparent underhandedness of his comment, we retweeted, “Jokes, you guys… Jokes. #chill.”
Later, after watching the speech again, Justin wrote, “Btw… I JUST watched my man Ye’s FULL speech… He always has a point. And I support it. #truth.”
Reports that Taylor Swift “freaked out” when Kanye went off script are not true. Reports had come out that Taylor had begun to “panic”, as the rapper went on about his position on award shows, kids and the media, but MTV insiders say this is untrue. At worst she appeared awkward as she stood next to his wife in the audience but there wasn’t anything to it. They had of course agreed to his talking points before she agreed to present him the award, but as usual, Kanye went on a whole other direction.
By comparison, this wasn’t the most shocking or melodramatic Kanye West VMA moment, but as some people have come to expect, the man always has something to get off his chest, and he goes about it in the most nonconformist ways.
